Project objectives
The SMART-PIV project technical objectives are associated
to the achievement of significant performance improvement in the
reliability characterisation of biomedical devices prior human implantation,
through the development of a new generation high-performance and
user-friendly SMART-PIV system, validated within a system integration
process.
The most important scientific objective of the SMART-PIV
project is constituted by the demonstration of SMART-PIV effectiveness
to experimentally validate biomedical devices by providing crucial
information on the quality of the fluid dynamics and associated
statistical data that are not easily achievable by means of other
in vitro techniques.
The successful exploitation of the SMART-PIV project
outcomes, allowing the PIV Technology to become the standard tool
for design and validation of biomedical devices prior to implantation,
will produce significant advantages on the following societal themes:
enable cardiac chronic patients with very low probability of life
survive with an acceptable degree of independence
reduce the risk of failure of implanted devices, with less extent
of re-intervention or application of remedial actions as a direct
consequence of the increased reliability and longevity of devices
improve patient’s quality of life by avoiding the need to
daily receive anti-coagulant therapy to reduce risk of thrombosis
